Celebrating Day

      June 5 is celebrated as the World Environment Day. The students of Standard 10 decided to celebrate this day by planting saplings in the playground. Each student pledged to look after one tree. The message was : Save the Trees and the Trees will Save You. An exhibition was also held in the assembly hall. The topic was : Environmental Problems in Cities. There were charts and models which showed the causes of air, water and noise pollution and how we can prevent or control it. The students explained the bad effects of Environmental pollution.

       
          The Annual sports Day of Shanti Niketan Sankul Was celebrated on 12 December. After a march- past by the participants, our sports teacher Shri Rathod gave a welcome speech. Our principal urged us to play with sportsmanship. There were many events like running, high jump, long jump and discuss throw . Team games like basketball, football and cricket were also played. The teachers acted as judges and referees. The Mayor, Shri Tondon , was the chief guest. Alok Pradhan was selected the Best Sportsman. The chief guest congratulated the winners and encouraged the rest of the participants.

      Last Sunday, I visited the book fair that was held at the Town Hall. Some of the leading publishers of the country participated in the fair. A big crowd of book lovers thronged the Town Hall. Attractive discounts were offered on selected books. People showed a lot of interest in English and Gujarati literature. There were books on poetry, essays, dramas, humour, travel and recipes. There were encyclopaedia and dictionaries in English and Gujarati. Educational and music CDs recorded a good sale. It was a very interesting fair.

          On the day of Diwali , a fire broke out in a house in my neighbourhood Raja Mehta's Pol. Some children were bursting crackers on the open ground in front of the house. Suddenly, a rocket entered the house and set the curtains on fire. Slowly, the fire spread All over the room. The fire brigade was called. The fire was brought under control in half hour. But the damage to the property had been done by that time. However, fortunately, there was no loss of life. The injured were taken to the city Hospital and discharged after some first aid.
